Oh What a Night....
We started the day off on a high note at The Boulders seeing 3 lions mostly sleeping. Also seeing a mama hyena with her pups was pretty special, too!We had a ball just watching them! We also saw some warthogs, zebras rhinos, sleeping elephants and the usual zillions of impalas and what I would call their relatives. We had a fabulous breakfast overlooking the river. We had a lot of fun watching the Cape Buffalo, ginormous bull elephant, and huge kududs while nibbling on eggs benedict. We hated to leave our very congenial group... especially our new friends from Virginia Beach! We elected to be driven to our new "digs" at Royal Malawane instead of flying. It was very eye opening! We went through many villages. I was very shocked and dismayed over the lack of water these people have! It made me much more appreciative of Victor Smith and also another man on Cru Canadian board that are drilling wells for water here in Africa! WOW! We had a royal welcome here at Royal Malawane! Love our room as well as the lodge, spa and everything else! We got settled in and left on a game drive. We were with 1 other young couple (I am SURE they loved being with us!!!) that was on their 3 week honeymoon! We love our driver/guide and tracker. We immediately were in the middle of a 300 member Cape Buffalo herd. Pretty unreal. We also saw lots of zebras, giraffes, we saw hippos, rhinos, civet, jackal, and lots of others. We saw a huge gathering og vultures and went scouting for hyenas. Instead we came face to face with 4 lions. Pretty fab! If they can smell fear...then she was really smelling me! Just had a 6 course dinner! WOW!!!

Post a hyena pic.
ReplyDeleteIn the story that Daddy wrote of his hunt in the 1920's, he said that hyennas were feared by the natives due to the diseases they carry in their mouths. They eat dead things, like vultures do, and their bite could be deadly.
ReplyDeleteAnd he said that lions at night roamed their camp, and one of them sniffed someone's foot and pith helmet!
I am going to have to pull out that story and share it with everyone. It was in the newspaper a million years ago, and I know you would love it, Angelyn, and that Barry would, too. I know Daddy would be thrilled that his namesake and his "bride" are touring Africa!
XO,
Sheila
P.S. He was in Kenya during the same period that the story in the book OUT OF AFRICA occurred. Mr. Cottar was his guide, and he begged Daddy to stay and be a guide with him.
