The Great Migration and River Crossings!

The Great Migration!
Many people don't understand that the great migration is never ending. The wildebeest and many of the zebras travel in a circle through parts of Kenya and Tanzania. No one knows exactly when the animals are going to decide to move from one place or another. Sure, there is a guideline of when and where the animals will be.....but sometimes they are a month or longer early or late. Also, they go to and for within the large circle that is the pathway of the usual migration. For instance, when we were in the Mara a large number of wildebeest crossed back and forth over the Mara River. We sat for several hours on 2 separate occasions on the river bank where a large number of wildebeest had gathered. We just knew that they were going to cross. Many vehicles filled with fellow gawkers were gathered on both sides of the river. After nervously staring at the crocs (who were more excited than we were!), suddenly they took off along a roadless area of the river to a possible crossing away from all the awaiting gawkers. Then the came back. After doing this several times, the herd moved back to the plains. Of course, at 2am, they crossed but at an area that was inaccessible to us. A day later they crossed back over...but we were elsewhere in the Mara. There is no telling how many times various groups of wildebeest and zebras will cross back and forth over the Mara river and all of the other rivers while they are in the Mara!?!? Oh well... I am glad that I was not one of the tourist that stay for a week or even longer hanging out at the river bank just hoping for a crossing.....there is so much more to see!!!!!
